Access control systems buyer’s guide
Credentials, readers, controllers, cloud vs on-premise, and how to unify access with video — with the platforms we install (2N, AXIS, Hanwha, Genetec).
Access control decides who gets through which door, when, and leaves a record of it. Modern systems also tie into your cameras and intercoms. This guide covers how the pieces fit, the credential options, cloud vs on-premise, and the platforms we install.
What an access control system includes
- Credentials — what a person presents: card/fob, mobile (phone) credential, PIN, or biometric.
- Readers — mounted at the door to read the credential.
- Controllers — the brains that decide to unlock and log the event (e.g. AXIS network door controllers).
- Locks — electric strikes, maglocks or smart locks that physically secure the door.
- Software — where you manage people, schedules, doors and reports (often unified with video).
- Intercoms / video entry — for visitor access and remote door release (e.g. 2N).
Credential types compared
| Credential | Convenience | Security | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Card / fob | High | Medium | Familiar; can be lost or cloned if using legacy formats — use encrypted (e.g. DESFire). |
| Mobile credential | Very high | High | Phone-based; nothing extra to carry, easy to issue/revoke remotely. |
| PIN code | Medium | Low–Medium | No hardware to issue, but codes get shared; best combined with a card. |
| Biometric | Medium | Very high | Fingerprint/face; strong for high-security doors; consider privacy rules. |
Cloud vs on-premise access control
Local server / controllers
Management software runs on site. Full control and no subscription, but you maintain the server and updates. Good for single sites and strict data rules.
Managed in the cloud
Manage doors and users from a browser anywhere, with automatic updates and easy multi-site rollout, on a subscription. Ideal for distributed sites and lean IT.
Integrate access with video
The biggest wins come from unifying access control with your VMS: a door-forced or door-held event instantly pulls up the camera covering that door, and badge-ins are tied to video for fast investigations. Genetec (Synergis) unifies both natively; AXIS, Hanwha and Milestone offer tight access-and-video integrations.
Platforms & brands we install
- 2N — IP intercoms, video door entry and access units for visitor access and remote release.
- AXIS — network door controllers and readers that integrate cleanly with AXIS video.
- Hanwha — access control that pairs with Wisenet cameras and VMS.
- Genetec Security Center (Synergis) — enterprise access unified with video and ALPR.

Which fits you?
- A few doors, one building → on-premise controllers (AXIS) + encrypted cards or mobile credentials.
- Several sites, central management → cloud access control + mobile credentials.
- Visitor / lobby / multi-tenant entry → 2N video intercoms with remote release.
- High-security doors → add biometric or multi-factor (card + PIN).
- Want video + access in one pane → Genetec Synergis, or AXIS/Hanwha integrated with your VMS.
