Video Management Software Compared: AXIS vs Milestone vs Genetec vs Hanwha BLAZE (2026)

VMS Comparison

Video management software compared: AXIS, Milestone, Genetec & Hanwha BLAZE

How the leading on-premise VMS platforms compare — plus cloud VSaaS (Arcules, YourSix) and AI-driven monitoring. From an integrator certified across all of them.

By CamCentral Systems Inc. · AXIS Camera Station Specialist · Milestone & Genetec authorized · Hanwha partner · Updated June 2026

The video management system (VMS) is the brain of your surveillance system — it records, displays, searches and analyzes every camera, and ties video to access control and analytics. Below we compare the four on-premise platforms we deploy most — AXIS Camera Station, Milestone XProtect, Genetec Security Center and Hanwha BLAZE — then cover cloud (VSaaS) options and AI-powered monitoring.

Quick pick

AXIS-centric

AXIS Camera Station

The simplest, best-value choice when your cameras are mostly AXIS and you want tight integration without per-server complexity.

Open & scalable

Milestone XProtect

The vendor-neutral workhorse — the widest camera support and add-on ecosystem, scaling from a free tier to thousands of cameras.

Unified security

Genetec Security Center

One platform for video, access control and license-plate recognition — the enterprise/government choice where everything must converge.

Hybrid AI

Hanwha BLAZE

Hanwha’s next-generation hybrid AI VMS — on-prem performance with cloud federation, WiseAI search, and ready-to-run appliances. Ideal for Wisenet sites.

The platforms in depth

AXIS Camera Station

Purpose-built for AXIS devices, Camera Station (and the newer Camera Station Pro/Edge line) is the fastest path to a polished, reliable system when your fleet is AXIS. Setup is simple, licensing is per-device and predictable, and the integration with AXIS cameras, speakers, intercoms and analytics is seamless. It also supports ONVIF cameras. As an AXIS Camera Station Specialist, this is our default recommendation for AXIS-centric small and mid-size sites.

Milestone XProtect

XProtect is the open-platform benchmark: it supports an enormous range of camera makes and models and has a deep marketplace of third-party integrations and analytics. It scales from the free XProtect Essential+ tier up through Expert and Corporate for very large, multi-site deployments with failover and centralized management. Choose Milestone when you want vendor neutrality, maximum device choice, and room to grow.

Genetec Security Center

Security Center unifies video (Omnicast), access control (Synergis) and license-plate recognition (AutoVu) in a single platform, with a strong emphasis on cybersecurity and centralized operations. It is the platform of choice for enterprise, transportation, city and government deployments where physical security systems must converge and be managed together. It carries more cost and complexity in exchange for that unification.

Hanwha BLAZE

BLAZE is Hanwha Vision’s next-generation hybrid AI video management system. It pairs on-premise performance with cloud-based federation and centralized user management, so you can run multiple sites under one secure pane of glass. BLAZE natively supports Hanwha Wisenet cameras, speakers, intercoms and thermal devices — auto-detecting hardware and applying optimized settings for faster installs — and taps WiseAI for AI investigation: semantic search with natural-language queries like “person with a backpack in the lobby,” and similarity search to follow a person across cameras. BLAZE is also offered on purpose-built, pre-licensed appliances that run out of the box. It is the strongest choice for Hanwha-centric sites that want modern AI tools with minimal server management.

Prefer the cloud? VSaaS options

If you want minimal on-site hardware, automatic updates and anywhere access, video surveillance as a service (VSaaS) puts your VMS in the cloud. We deploy two cloud-native platforms, and both AXIS Camera Station and Hanwha BLAZE also offer hybrid cloud connectivity if you want to keep some recording on-prem.

Cloud / VSaaS

Arcules

Milestone’s cloud-native VSaaS — a full cloud VMS with access control, analytics and AI, supporting 6,000+ ONVIF cameras and integrating with Milestone XProtect. Subscription-based, accessed by browser or mobile app.

Cloud / VSaaS

YourSix

A 100% cloud-native platform that unifies video, access control, AI, audio, monitoring and sensors with no on-site server — all from a single pane of glass. Particularly strong with AXIS cameras.

AI Monitoring

Monitoring: an AI operator that never sleeps

Software is only half the story. For live monitoring, CamCentral uses Hakimo — an autonomous AI security operator that watches your existing cameras and access-control hardware in real time. It detects threats you can describe in plain language, issues instant on-site speaker talk-downs, and follows your standard operating procedures, escalating to human operators only when needed. The result is 24/7 vigilance without the cost and fatigue of traditional guarding — and it works with the cameras you already have.

Which should you choose?

Your situation Recommended VMS

Mostly Hanwha cameras, want hybrid + AI search Hanwha BLAZE
Minimal on-site hardware / multi-site cloud Arcules or YourSix (VSaaS)
Government / transportation / city-scale Genetec (often with Milestone in the mix)
Small business, a handful of cameras AXIS Camera Station, Hanwha BLAZE or a VSaaS plan

How CamCentral helps

Because we are certified and authorized across all of these platforms — AXIS Camera Station Specialist, plus Milestone, Genetec and Hanwha BLAZE, and cloud VSaaS via Arcules and YourSix — our recommendation is driven by your site, not by which license we happen to sell. We design the system, license the VMS, install and commission it, add AI monitoring through Hakimo where you want eyes on glass 24/7, and support it all afterward. New to the hardware side too? Start with our Security Camera Buyer’s Guide.
