Cloud vs On-Premise Video Surveillance: Which Is Right for You? (2026)

Comparison Guide

Cloud vs on-premise video surveillance

On-premise NVR/VMS, cloud VSaaS, or hybrid? How the three models compare on cost, scaling, bandwidth and control — and how to choose.

Should your security video live on a recorder in your building, in the cloud, or both? The answer shapes your upfront cost, your monthly bill, how you scale, and who maintains it. Here is how on-premise, cloud (VSaaS) and hybrid surveillance compare.

The three models

On-premise

NVR / server VMS

Cameras record to a local NVR or server running a VMS. You own the hardware and the storage stays on site.

Cloud

VSaaS

Cameras stream to a cloud platform (Arcules, YourSix). No on-site server; you pay a subscription and access video from a browser or app.

Hybrid

On-prem + cloud

Record locally for resilience, federate and view in the cloud for multi-site access — e.g. AXIS Camera Station or Hanwha BLAZE.

Side-by-side

  On-premise (NVR/VMS) Cloud (VSaaS) Hybrid
Upfront cost Higher (hardware) Lower (little/no hardware) Moderate
Ongoing cost Low (maintenance) Subscription per camera Subscription + some hardware
Where video lives On site In the cloud Both
Upload bandwidth Minimal High (every camera streams up) Moderate
Scaling / multi-site Add servers per site Add cameras instantly Easy, centralized
Maintenance You/your integrator Provider (auto-updates) Shared
Works if internet drops Yes (records locally) Recording continues on-camera/edge; remote view pauses Yes (local recording)

How to choose

  • Single site, lots of cameras, want lowest long-term cost → on-premise NVR/VMS.
  • Multiple sites, lean IT, want anywhere access and automatic updates → cloud VSaaS.
  • Need local resilience but central management → hybrid (record on-prem, view in cloud).
  • Limited upload bandwidth → on-premise or hybrid, since cloud streams every camera up continuously.
  • Strict retention / data-residency rules → on-premise or a hybrid with local storage.

Storage sizing, retention and bandwidth all interact — the right answer is specific to your site. For the software side of this decision, see our VMS comparison guide; for hardware, the Security Camera Buyer’s Guide.

How CamCentral helps

We design and deploy all three models — on-premise NVR/VMS, cloud VSaaS (Arcules, YourSix), and hybrid (AXIS, Hanwha BLAZE) — and size the storage and bandwidth for you. As a vendor-neutral integrator with 40+ years of experience, our recommendation fits your site, not a single product line.
